Tiger Sharks in the medals

From the Evening Press, first published Wednesday 28th May 2003.

SELBY Tiger Sharks swimmers have enjoyed a busy few weeks with success at several major competitions.

Danny Martland won the 200metres backstroke at the Harrogate Distance Meet to qualify for the ASA National Championships later this summer. There were medals too for Richard Russell - silvers in the 200m breaststroke and 200m freestyle, and bronze in the 200m butterfly.

Russell and fellow Tiger Sharks, Stacey Flanagan, Lorna Johnson, Kirsten Walsh, and Vicki Wilson took six other top-eight places in a meet distinguished by many personal bests from Selby swimmers.

Just a step away from the National Championships, swimmers from all over the region converged on Sheffield's Ponds Forge for the North-Eastern Counties Senior and Youth Championships.

Selby's Sarah Lambert added another gold to her burgeoning collection in the 50m backstroke, a silver from the 50m freestyle and two bronze medals in the 100m and 200m backstroke.

Lorna Johnson reached the final of the 200m breaststroke and Stacey Flanagan making two semi-finals.

Richard Russell was a finalist in four events - 100m and 200m breaststroke and 200m and 400m individual medley - just missing out on the medal places in each.

Danny Martland brought home a bronze in the 50m backstroke and reached the final of the 100m event.
